In 2018, I wrote an article in a publication by the Christian Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria-CMDA with the title: “Think Big, Start Small.” Most of my article highlighted how important it is to start something. In retrospect, I’d say my idea of thinking big was myopic because I never got to answer this question: “What is my ultimate goal?”. I had no clue who I was, so how could I tell what I really wanted to achieve?
So, when for the first time I was asked to talk about myself in five minutes, I couldn’t find the words and it was all too surprising. That question however has made the greatest impact on my life because I had to do some soul searching and look inwards to see the kind of person, I am. Knowing who I am makes it easier for me to make goals that align with who I really want to be. When Socrates said, “Know thyself”, he wasn’t referring to some shallow knowledge of man’s desires and needs but more about understanding one’s nature and living it.
What’s your Avatar? What’s your superpower? Africans teach their children about modesty and the importance of being humble and quiet about one’s abilities. So, when as part of the mentorship training in the Strategic Transitions Incubator program, I was asked about my avatar, I didn’t have the words. Thinking about my abilities and strengths really made me realize how much of a superhuman I am and the gifts I have been blessed. It has helped to boost my confidence, so much that I was able to present a photo essay project before intellectuals from around the world. I’m glad I answered that question.
The Incubator hub training program gave me a strong sense of direction and purpose and a better understanding of myself and the limitless abilities that lie within me, as well as steps to take to unleash those abilities to make the world we live in a better place. As the saying goes: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day.’ One day, I’ll stand tall, and I believe the same would be said about me and how the incubator hub was a major part of that beautiful edifice waiting to be unveiled: Me.
